Dear parents,

This last Sunday at Student Ministries, I planned a Q&A evening to answer some of the many questions that the students had dropped in our box. I got to a few of them. But based on many discussions throughout the week and on Sunday, it seemed that most of the students had something else on their minds. Nearly all were startled and a bit rattled by the shooting of Charlie Kirk. By a show of hands, a majority had even seen the video. So we sat down for a heart-shepherding conversation about God’s Word and how God calls Christians to live in a world that rejects Him. I discouraged students from seeking out or rewatching the footage.

We walked through key truths: death is real but not final for those in Christ; Christians refuse personal revenge and entrust justice to God and appropriate authorities while praying for enemies; and Scripture is our ultimate authority and sufficient for moments like these.

I hope it was helpful. At the very least, I pray that it served as a catalyst for students to seek answers in Scripture and to find comfort in discussing the difficult things they are thinking about with their pastors, their parents, and their church leaders, not just with peers or by keeping it in.
This Sunday, we will be back together for a lesson on how to read the Bible as we continue to move through the contents of Fundamentals of the Faith this year.

At home, I hope that what we are covering translates into time together as a family in the Word and into conversations about how God’s Word must shape our thinking and living. It is often hard to know exactly what to say, but I hope to model for the students (and encourage you to do so as well) a heart that looks to God’s Word for answers and seeks a distinctly Christlike response to the troubles of this life.

I look forward to seeing your students and, along with the amazing servants, to continuing to come alongside you in the evangelism and discipleship of your students.
