Psalm 46:1-3
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at its swelling pride.”

The geological imagery of this Psalm proves the unmovable and mighty unstable when earthquake and flood arise, yet the spiritual imagery proves our Redeemer’s refuge remains even when the stability of this world collapses. How terrible it would be “were not the right Man on our side”! Take heart, Christian, our salvation is secured by God our fortress and deliverer and our foundation immovable. May thankfulness and obedience flow from our hearts as a result of these unshakable truths.

*For a more thorough understanding of Luther’s hymn “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”, I’d encourage you to read Psalm 46 in its entirety as you prepare for worship in song this Sunday.
