Psalm 116:1-4
I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy.
Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live.
The snares of death encompassed me; the pangs of Sheol laid hold on me;
I suffered distress and anguish. Then I called on the name of the Lord: “O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul!”

The psalmist’s words are simple: love for YAHWEH was spurred on by His granting of mercy. The writer also states that because YAHWEH has heard his pleas he will beseech YAHWEH as long as he lives. As I read through these verses I’m reminded that I can indeed relate to the psalmist’s words. I was at one point encompassed by the snares of death and held by the pangs of Sheol. Although I didn’t know it at the time, in my unbelief my unrepentant heart was destined for eternal death and destruction. But YAHWEH poured out mercy on my soul and delivered me from certain everlasting suffering. Now, I am overjoyed to be able to call on my God as long as I live because I’ve been saved through the cleansing blood of Christ.
