Isaiah 53:5
“But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.”

This prophetic chapter, written some 700 years before Christ was born, gives a detailed and precise look at the death of our Savior. Its message is clear: Christ died a shameful, gruesome death so that we could be healed. Healed of sin’s hold on our lives so that we could be reconciled with our Creator. When I read Isaiah 53, I am reminded of these lyrics:

“Behold the Man upon the cross, my sin upon His shoulders; Ashamed I hear my mocking voice call out among the scoffers. It was my sin that held Him there, until it was accomplished. His dying breath has brought me life, I know that it is finished”

As we prepare for worship together this Sunday, may we remember that it was our sin that His body was scourged and pierced for, it was our sin that held Him there, it was our sin that demanded His death and it was our sin that He willingly forgave. What a Savior!

By grace alone,
